On June 13, I had my PhD commencement. However, the ceremony itself is not an end to my PhD life, I was still “neck-deep” in writing/modifying dissertation for the past month or so. I have sent my dissertation draft to my committee members and now I can finally catch a breath and make a post.

Here’s a professional shot picture (i.e. $20 per photo) of my PI, Maria Marco and I. MM_grad

Below is a picture at my exit seminar when Maria introduced to the audience. MM_exit

Maria is a professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology at UC Davis. Under her mentorship, I studied the microbiome of fermented dairy products such as cheese using the state-of-art 16S rRNA gene sequencing approach. I also examined closely the DNA sequencing workflow from sample prep to bioinformatics methods.

At the UC Davis commencement, we were called one by one (for PhD grads) to the stage accompanied by our major professor, who held the hoods. When we arrived on the stage, we were hooded (yay!) and given a piece of participatory certificate (gah! Just hand me my diploma already!).

It was about 15s of glory per person, and I am so glad we get to do it in an indoor pavilion.
